Background

The grease filter is the first line of defence for any kitchen extract system and as such if it is not kept clean the pull through from the kitchen will be affected and in turn the temperature will rise, and in the worse case scenario lead to an outbreak of fire.

Martin Freeman of the London Fire Brigade reported that they were finding a lot of fires relating to ductwork. The main problems found were a lack of maintenance to grease filters and cooking with woks. There were at least 10 serious fires a week in London involving restaurants/hotels.

At the very least, without regular maintain and replacement, you will be exposed to increased danger of equipment failure.

Grease filters come in many different forms, for example; baffle or mesh, stainless steel, galvanised steel or aluminium.

Baffle type grease filters do not require regular replacement but will become damaged if mishandled or dropped.

Mesh type grease filters have a reasonable lifespan but the mesh core will eventually corrode and the panel will require replacement.
